How do I use my MSR Hydromedary Hydration Bag?
The MSR Hydromedary Hydration Bag is most commonly known as a camel bag. When on a hike or just doing garden work you must always stay hydrated & that is where the convenience of the Hydromedary comes in. It just fits easily into your backpack and with the options of having a 2 Liter, 2.5 Liter, or a 3 Liter bag, you will be able to fit it into any backpack you have.
Now what makes this product ideal for an emergency is the ability to have the MSR Miniworks EX Microfilter thread fit perfectly on the threads of the lid on the MSR Hydromedary Hydration Bag. So when you are in need of water just grab your hydration bag and filter and head to a river or lake and pump out the needed amount into your camel bag. This is ideal for a Grab-n-Go or Shelter-in-Place situation and since it fits into your 72 hour kit it’s a must have.
I personally keep one in my backpack when I go hiking and what made me fall in love with the MSR Hydromedary Hydration Bag is that when filling it up it has a low profile, ergonomic handle and wide-mouth opening for no-hassle filling. If you have filled up a camel bag, before, then you know why the specially designed handle is so nice to have.
Another thing I just love about this camel bag compared to others I have is that it can handle being frozen. To have a frozen pack on your back while you’re hiking can keep your body temperature down and also provides the convenience of having cold water, other brands of camel bags will crack & leak when frozen. Along with being durable this pack is BPA-free, and with the food-grade lining you do not have to worry about dealing with chemicals leaking into your water.
When drinking from your Hydromedary Hydration Bag it has a simple bite valve and you just bite down halfway for maximum flow, and when you’re done drinking, it has a simple shut off valve that you just rotate a quarter turn in either direction to close the water flow and conserve your water.
Now you might wonder how hard it is to clean it. You just need to do the following:
- Disassemble the bite valve for cleaning.
- After each use, wash reservoir thoroughly with soap and water, rinse and hang open until completely dry.
- To sanitize, fill reservoir with a diluted bleach solution (1 tablespoon per liter) and let sit over night before rinsing and drying.
So remember the next time you are out hiking, biking, or just jogging with your dog and you get thirsty stay hydrated with your MSR Hydromedary Hydration Bag.

For my Grab-and-Go bag (some times referred to as a Bug-out-bag (BOB)), I already have a filled hydration bag. However, I have added an appropriate amount of water stabilizer to the water so it will keep for many years without needing to be replaced.
For my Get-home-bag (GHB), one in each vehicle, I have an empty three liter hydtration bag and two 1.5 liter bottles of store-bought water. I would simply empty these bottles into the bag and throw the empties back into my bag.
Also, I have packets of gatorade mix I would put in my plastic bottles for some quick energy – I do not recommend putting these in the hydration bags though.
Enjoy
