Great addition to any long term food storage kit
I bought two #10 cans and a single pouch to taste test. The one in the pouch was a little broken up inside the pouch, but that did not effect taste. I would have broken it up anyway to eat it. A little on the dry side, but it is "freeze-dried" I thought it was awesome. I would imagine this kind of thing being a great snack on the Int'l Space Station. Very tasty, no weight to it, 'fun' to eat rather than some kind of tasteless survival ration.
Grand kids love it!
I had my grandkids visit me and I thought they might want to try (Astronaut ) ice cream, I gave them one each to try they loved they and thought it was fun eating this type of food. When they went back to school they told their friends they got to eat astronaut food thanks it was fun!!!
Desserts are a must
I hate people who stock up on beans and rice and wheat and consider themselves prepared for whatever. Who wants to eat that for weeks when you can have ice cream sandwiches. The container is very light and although it is still a #10 can, you can find yourself putting it in more precarious places you wouldnt put a 12lb can of drink mix.
This was a splurge buy for me and my daughter...they are broken up a bit but hey they are going to be eaten pretty fast any way..whats more fun than freeze dried ice cream.
Great Comfort Food
When SHTF, I'll be happy to have some ice cream sandwiches. I know this will keep my little ones satisfied for at least a little while!
Great to have
Your children will be thrilled to have these on hand in your food storage.
A great option
This is a really nice product to have in an emergency. It's such a treat to be able to have a dessert.
Delicious and morale-boosting
These are awesome! I love ice cream and am so happy that I don't have to worry about keeping these frozen during an emergency :) great treats just about anytime. Very nice flavor and I get a kick out of the texture.
These are awesome. I remember trying "astronaut food" as a child and always thought it was so cool :) Great to keep the kids calm during an emergency. I know my kids can't pass up any type of sweet food.
These were great! None were broken. Tried to rehydrating and freezing . Tasted just like the real thing. Have to work on how much water to use. Nice comfort food item.
I'll be Back for More
I love these. I have shared these with friends and family and all are interested in researching more about food storage. It is not all rice and beans. I send them to The Ready Store.
These are just a Fun & Different Treat. They are kind of "crispy", take small bites and let them "rehydtate" in your mouth. Ice cream that requires no freezer is handy for camping or hiking. In a shtf situation, these would satisfy a sugar fix nicely.
Vanilla ice cream that has been freeze dried is not the best thing since sliced bread. It's kind of flavorless and initially has a consistency of Styrofoam, BUT , it reconstitutes to a nice creamy texture in your mouth.
What absolutely makes this a taste of home are the ice cream wafers that bring it all together.
Having passed a can around, I have 6 positives against one negative where I myself am happy to have some on the side to satisfy a sweet tooth and maybe pacify a child.
A lot of people seem concerned with the slits in the ice cream sandwich package ( individually packaged in an original ice cream wax like paper package ) . The packaging is water proof, the slits are for the freeze drying process to actually be able to get the water out.
I'm hoping for a Neapolitan version.
I purchased 3 cans of Icecream sandwiches after trying a one serving size from this site. It has a different texture but once it starts to melt in your mouth is truely tastes like icecream. The price is a little high but it is comfort food and worth the extra money to have something different.
Suprise for the lunch box
Tried the ice cream sandwiches tonight and they were so good. Very dairy flavor and the chocolate was very good. Tried dipping it in some milk like a big cookie, recommend that highly. Great for my lunch tomorrow.
Would buy again!
These are great. Very creamy and has a great aftertaste.
Good, but I think they are too much
It is a bit cheaper to just buy the individually wrapped ones from mountain house! I think that makes it easier to hand out or save. These will last for 30yrs vs. mountain houses 5 or so, but you will want to eat them and buy more before then anyways, they taste so good!
Comment from The Ready Store:
Daniele, yes you are surely getting a longer shelf life in the #10 can. That is the trade-off versus the MH pouches.
Thanks for the review Daniele!
flavor great, packaging poor
I finally opened my can to try these out only to find each individual package was slashed one or two times down through the top layer of the cookie, creating a huge crumbly mess in the package as well as all over the can. This seems more like a packaging glitch than intentional (I hope). If I am to distribute these into individual meal packs I will have to re-seal every sandwich because the gaping holes allow the crumbles to fall out. I loved the flavor! The directions are a little vague on how exactly you re-hydrate them (optional, but not necessary to eat)but despite having to poor the contents into a bowl to eat it I found them quite tasty! The ice cream portion melts in your mouth to a smooth, creamy texture.
If the shredded packaging was an accident I would definitely order again, otherwise the mess makes them rather impractical.
From The Ready Store:
Slashing each pouch open is actually intentional. The Ice Cream sandwiches are slashed open prior to the freeze-drying process to allow the moisture to escape from the sandwich to preserve the shelf-life. They are a little messy, but the slight mess is necessary in order to have an ice cream sandwich in an emergency. Please contact us if you are dissatisfied with the product.
