I recently opened up a can that I had from when I first started food storing. It read on the can "best if opened before 6-11-2010". I've never tried this cheese before and it has a wonderful mildly sharp flavor with a sweet taste on the back of your tongue when your finished. It's texture is spreadable but not the way we Americans know spreadable cheese. It's like a softer version of a cheese curd, firm but spreadable.

Finicky grandchildren and I had cheese and crackers for breakfast today. I'd only planned for us to simply try this product. Oh well. Grandpa will just have to wait for a taste next can!

This stuff really is good, we've used it at parties before and no one ever noticed any difference. You guys need to add the MRE'S Peanut Butter packs to your inventory. With the PB packs, this cheese and the pilot crackers I am proof you can live on just that for years.

I really liked this cheese. It tastes like a cross between a mild cheddar and american. The thing I really also liked is that there is no coloring added unlike american cheese sometimes has. You would never know it is from a can.

TRY THIS CHEESE. You won't regret it! Eat it alone, in pasta, or on crackers. Be sure to store it in the refrigerator after opening - it's not shelf stable once the seal has been cracked.

One of our favorite foods is cheese. Just imagine how great it will be to have the taste of real cheese in an emergency! We bought a case of Bega and used one can. We tried it sliced on crackers and melted over broccoli. Not quite the same taste as fresh cheddar, but very good. Any way that we can vary our menu during an emergency will make things easier to endure. We are purchasing more than what we anticipate needing to share with our neighbors. It's a good deal considering how long we can store it.

  • Cheese that is ready when you need it

Getting dairy products for long-term food storage can be a challenge. But with a can of Bega, you'll have almost half a pound of shelf-stable cheese whenever you want it. The cheese has a mild cheddar taste; is slightly firmer in texture than processed American cheese; and can be spread, sliced, shredded or melted like any normal cheese. I like making mini pizzas, using a couple of pilot crackers, Bega cheese, sausage crumbles, marinara, and a pinch of red pepper flakes. It is also a nice addition to freeze-dried breakfast wraps or chicken wraps with MRE tortillas.

Bega, the manufacturer, has a 2 year shelf life guarantee but like in many cases with other canned products it can be good for MANY MANY more than that. People have eaten it 10 years later and loved doing so.

The can is 3.5" by 3.5" by 2" tall and is crammed with processed cheese that is extremely easy to work with. You can thinly slice it with a knife for cheeseburgers or melt it down and make a nacho cheese sauce amongst a million other things. One thing is for sure, you are going to be happy you have Bega cheese!

NOTE:Once opened, cheese should be treated like normal cheese products, refrigerate to extend open canned shelf life.
