Food Storage FAQs
General Food Storage FAQs
In order to maximize the shelf-life of your food storage, you should store the food in a cool, dark, dry location. Click here to read our article on food storage locations.
Since the shelf-life of food storage is largely dependent on the storage location, a manufacture date might be the best way to gauge your food storage. The manufacture date can be located on the bottom of your food storage can.
With many products, The Ready Store employes a Julian calendar system. You can click here to read about Julian dates and print out a sheet to keep with your food storage.
Sorry. We currently do not send samples. We do have some samples in our retail store. However, if you’d like to try the food before you make a large purchase, we recommend that you check out our smaller pouches to sample beforehand.
A #10 can is a typical metal can that most people associate with a coffee can. The number 10 does not refer to the capacity or weight of the can. The can is 7 inches tall and 6.25 inches wide. Click here to learn more about the sizes of a #10 can.
The Ready Store makes sure that our #10 cans will protect your food with double-enameled protection, O2 absorbers and quality can seams.
The number of servings in a can will depend on the type of food inside. The servings are listed on the front of the can’s label.
Freeze-drying has been a reliable source of food preservation for decades. Fruits, vegetables, meats and even full meals are subjected to very low pressures in order to extract up to 98 percent of the water. This enables a long shelf-life while trapping in nutrients, flavor and taste. For an in-depth look at the freeze-drying process, click here.
Since the majority of water is extracted from freeze-dried food, these foods can typically stay on the shelf for 25 - 30 years or more! However, this depends on your method of storage. It should be stored in a cool, dry, dark location.
The great thing about freeze-dried food is that it’s easy to prepare. All you have to do is add water. Some dishes, such as ice cream or fruits, can just be eaten without water as a lightweight snack.
The Ready Store prepares and processes our food in the United States!
We only use the highest quality food sources. The majority of our produce is grown here in the U.S.. Some of our fruits and meats are shipped from South America and Mexico. While many of our competitors might try to save a buck by ordering food from unreliable sources, we will never do that! We are dedicated to providing you with the highest-quality food storage in the industry!
It’s recommended that you eat the contents of your freeze-dried food within 6-12 months. Once prepared with water, the food should be treated like any other perishable food. You might be interested in our video about the shelf-life of an open can of food.
Dehydrated food is prepared when foods like fruits, grains, vegetables, etc. have water removed for preservation. The water is removed through a slower process than freeze-drying. The water will typically be evaporated, smoked, sun dried, etc.
The shelf-life of dehydrated food depends on your storage locations. However, if stored correctly, dehydrated food has a shelf-life of 10 - 20 years or more!
For the majority of dehydrated foods, you will need to cook them. Depending on the food, you should expect between 5 - 20 minutes of cooking to prepare the dehydrated food.

Water Storage FAQs
It’s recommended that you store 1 gallon of water per person per day for an emergency situation.
Try to store your water in a cool, dark place. You’ll want to keep your water storage out of direct sunlight and off of cement floors. You should not store your water next to other chemicals.
A filter removes impurities from water through a physical barrier, a chemical or a biological process. They typically use a mechanical hand pump or a drip system. Water filters remove bacteria, protozoa, and microbial cysts. They do not however, remove viruses from the water.
A purifier removes unwanted chemicals and other contaminants from your water. Water purifiers typically remove bacteria, protozoa, microbial cysts and viruses.
MREs, or Meals-Ready-to-Eat, are military style dishes in a self-contained package. They are designed to withstand large falls and are very durable.
If stored below 60°F, an MRE can stay good for 5 years. The cooler the temperature, the longer it will store. Check out our image on MRE shelf-life.
Many of our MREs come with Flameless Heaters. These packets allow you to heat your MRE by simply adding water. These heaters have a shelf-life of 60 years. You might be interested in our article about heating MREs or you can check out our short video.
Our MREs are made by the contractors who supply the Department of Defence. They are made to military specifications. The only difference is that they do include gum, hot sauce and come in clear packaging. Selling MREs that were made for the military is illegal.
MREs use a 4-digit modified Julian date. The code is usually stamped on the MRE box or pouch. Click here to learn how to determine your MRE manufacture date. You can also use the MRE Shelf-Life Calculator in our ReadyResources section.
