Zombie Apocalypse…Has a Government Agency Gone Too Far?

There’s a government agency out there that has the tag line at the top of their website that reads, “Your Online Source for Credible Health Information”.  Really?  No I’m serious, Really?

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on May 16th posted and article on their blog, “Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse”.  This article lays out all the ‘Facts’ on getting ready for the Zombie Apocalypse, because lets face it, when it comes to a disaster like this it isn’t question of ‘IF’ it’s only a question of ‘WHEN’.

“The rise of zombies in pop culture has given credence to the idea that a zombie apocalypse could happen. In such a scenario zombies would take over entire countries, roaming city streets eating anything living that got in their way. The proliferation of this idea has led many people to wonder ‘How do I prepare for a zombie apocalypse?’”- Ali S. Khan

Ironically the CDC’s site was overloaded due to the popularity of the post.  And I say Kudos! to the CDC for their creative way to draw peoples attention to the fundamentals of getting ready for a real disaster.  As they mention in their article, when it really comes down to there’s a handful of fundamental items that you should always have on hand that will meet you and your family’s needs for most emergencies.

So whether it’s a Zombie Apocalypse or just your average plain ol’earthquake or hurricane, you guessed it, you’ll want to have these items on hand:

  • Water (1 gallon per person per day)
  • Food (Non-perishables that will feed you for at least 3 days)
  • Medications (Both prescription and non-prescription)
  • Tools and Supplies (battery powered radio, utility knife, duct tape, etc)
  • Sanitation and Hygiene (toilet paper, soap, bleach)
  • Clothing and Bedding (a change of clothes for each member of the family and blankets)
  • Important Documents (driver’s license, passport and birth certificates)
  • First Aid Supplies (A basic kit that will at least treat minor cuts and injuries)

Along with the CDC we appreciate the real concern of a coming Zombie Apocalypse and have created a video to assist you in your preparations for the coming catastrophe.  Remember, it’s not a matter of ‘IF’ it’s only a matter ‘WHEN’.

It’s the same list they recommend for any disaster – just a much “hipper” way of getting people to actually prepare.

I know a number of 20 somethings that made a “Zombie Kit” this weekend that had never bothered to think about preparedness – and we live in a tsunami zone.

If you don’t have a home culture of preparation and a cheap pop culture joke gets you to try it – then I say good on them!

If I could suggest adding a couple of other items to your survival kit: First a thick vinyl/rubber apron and then sturdy clear protective glasses. These items would be essential to prevent zombie fluid from landing on the survivalist, particularly while utilizing his trusty machete.
We all should be thankful we have the CDC providing us with this urgent information. As we all know, the Government always has their citizens’ safety and welfare in mind during disasters, natural or otherwise.

    To all concerned:
“Zombies” is the term the Government is using in reference to those that will riot should the dollar collapse. So, while it may seem like a clever title, there is probably some nefarious humor attached to it as well.

I agree that this was creative thinking on the part of the CDC. It was time for the annual hurricane season posting. The normal emergency awareness postings on the CDC web site usually get 1000-3000 views. So much for getting the message out. This incredibly humorous article was an instant hit, crashing their server. Many people who have never heard of emergency preparedness now at least have a clue.

I have read posts on other web sites lambasting the CDC for wasting tax money on trivial fiction like zombies. I applaud them for thinking outside the box and massively increasing the viewership of a message they post every year. They managed to increase readership without spending extra money and I’m sure they had a blast doing it.

They say zombies are highly suggestible and follow the orders of the head zombie and their actions are mindless. That sounds EXACTLY like a certain group of individuals I know of in Washington DC. They are said to live on a hill…Capital Hill if I remember correctly…

This is freaking awesome! It caught my attention! Glad to see that the CDC is educating people by getting their attention with pop culture. Whoever was the person at the CDC that thought to write that article deserves a raise!
To bad they’re working hand-in-hand with FEMA to heard all the non-preppers into FEMA Camps…

Oh well, I’ll be in my Bug Out Location with my family!

Good Prepping all, and GOD Bless!

Their list, while a good idea is seriously lacking unless you believe that the apacalypse will only last three days.

It’s just a matter of when??? Hell, the zombies are already here. They are most commonly know as democratic politicians in DC. Love the article, but one should be wise to be prepared for all disasters as much as possible. One thing left off of your list was a firearm and ammo so you can keep what you have and protect yourself and family from the looters—zombies or not. It’s just good sense…..

First of all, thank you Ready Store staff for making us aware of the CDC Apoc website.

However, I do not agree with you and some other customers assessment that the CDC apoc website is hip or good marketing for emergency preparation.

In fact, I believe what the CDC Apoc website is horrendous!

Space is limited here, so I will keep my comments brief.

I believe that the CDC’s efforts are sponsored by antichrist forces.

    I sense that:

    1. The CDC posted it on their website on May 16th to make MOCKERY out of a Christian group’s belief that May 21st was Judgment Day;

    2. The CDC is making mockery out of Christian scripture prophecies in our Holy Bible, and;

    3. Following the DITWhit Obama’s lead (The Devil In The Whitehouse=DITWhit), they are following up on his invocation of literally raising HELL ON EARTH!

Lastly, the CDC’s audacity to put such materials of Zombies on earth should serve as a warning for us. That warning is do not trust vaccines or any medication that is condoned by the CDC.

Because you may just wind up being one of their Zombies.

    Blessings,

    …Chappy

P.S. My comments regarding President Obama is not racist-borne, as I am an black man myself.

I found the the CDC posting comical, not humorous. It was not that long ago that the CDC was advocating that firearms were a “disease” in supporting the ban on private ownership of firearms in America. Now, they want to use the metaphore of zombies for preparedness, when everyone knows that the best defense against zombies is a firearm. If the CDC had it’s way, the best defense that Americans would have against zombies would be to politely tell them to please not eat me.

Hey Alyce, really like the flame thrower idea. Pretty much taken care of the EMP thing. Picked up a gieger counter last year. Can’t be too careful anymore. A boat is out. I live in the high desert–6200 feet. Flooding just ain’t gonna happen. If it does everybody is screwed. Beach front property doesn’t sound too bad I guess. Maybe I’ll rethink the boat idea. Love the way you thing. We’d probably get along just dandy………..

There is a critical shortage of gieger counters and a long backorder list. However a simple inexpensive solution already exists in most homes. Take a bag of microwave

Dont worry about zombies in a major catastrophe. Worry about the 50 million abondend/stray/feral dogs packing up in feral wolf/dog packs roving the urban/suburbs for food. Hmmm they are cannines = carnivores. then they breed in 9 months time you have 100-300 million. A .22 does just fine. Think about it the next time a fire truck siren sounds and the niegbors dog joins in the cry of the pack. Millions of years of instinct still there. Go figure.

I agree that having a list like this is great for everyone to have but even more so is the need to educate folks on how to survive off the land or whatever they have access to… such as how to build a fire and get clean water. Someone can steal your supply list of stuff then you will HAVE to survive off seemingly nothing.
