The Ant and The Grasshopper…
Grasshopper: News flash… the world is still here. The sun is shining, the flowers are in bloom, and spring is here. Why are you worried about preparedness?
Ant: First of all, preparedness is not about worry. It’s about not needing to worry. It’s not about fear, it’s about vanquishing fear. Being ready will do more than almost anything out there to help you feel peaceful and secure.
Grasshopper: But aren’t you tired of storing away food for the long winter? Don’t you want to go out and buy that toy you’ve been wishing you have? Don’t you want to take a break? What if you are wasting your time and winter never comes?
Ant: Winter always comes. If you haven’t realized it, life is a cycle of ups and downs. So when you’re up, it’s time to store away some of that extra goodness for a rainy day, or worse a winter’s day.
Grasshopper: You’re out of control, you’re crazy. You must be listening to too much talk radio. It’s nonsense. I mean if something bad did happen, I know you would be willing to redistribute your food to me right?
Ant: Ummm….
Grasshopper: But really we don’t need to worry about that because it will never happen.
Ant: Well, I guess I’ll talk to you later.
Grasshopper: Where are you going?
Ant: I can see a storm coming.

Ahh, yes. Prepping is about hoping for the best and preparing for the worst.
Nice story.
May 6th, 2011 at 10:41 amIt is nice to be reminded that we need to always be prepared and that there is always going to be a store in our future if we are not careful.
May 8th, 2011 at 9:24 pmIt remines me of the old childrens story, chicken little:
May 8th, 2011 at 9:31 pmThe sky is falling, the sky is falling and no one believed him
My hubby and I felt a strong anxiety back in 2008 that we needed to get prepared even though everything was going well at that time. We have both been laid off from our jobs now and feel very blessed to have those extra items and food on hand to live off of. Always be prepared, you never know what will happen!
May 8th, 2011 at 9:41 pmHi, I am a Humanitarian Worker and plan to go to Chieng Rai,Northern thailand and Nepal India to construct two Orphanages. If only I could take some food storage to these nations to feed the people would be a blessing.
Please do not write my full name in but Mere would be fine thank you and I love the story.
May 8th, 2011 at 10:18 pmWhy is it that when you tell other people to prepare they say you’re paranoid and crazy and wasting you’re time and stop telling me I should prepare cause you’re a buzz kill etc…and then follow up with anyway if the crap hits the fan we’re coming to your house!
May 8th, 2011 at 10:52 pmWE have had our 3/4 inch of rain and dont feel drenched at all but parched…our winds blew by but we are not complacent over in the UK and thank you for being rushed off your feet to prepare for the worst throughout the year…we have some foodstorage companies that trade over here but i have had my visit to you and my on hand demonstration of preparing a meal or entree and thank you all very much
MY past purchases some no longer in my hands have not all been repeated when i get back to thinking about preparedness again and budget is not what our government gives us for emergencies in basic budgets and 3 day bank holidays at a tin of spaghetti is all they think we will put by over here for the period expected for shops to be shut…..we know and we eventually search for more info and trekk the campshops on…I liked your cinamon apples but i tucked in way to early for an emergency.
LOvely story by ant and his friends though
May 8th, 2011 at 10:54 pmWe spend our time, money and effort being prepared… and we do so quietly.
Only our very immediate family is aware. We try our level best to ensure no one suspects we are “evil food hoarders” because we wish to avoid the confrontation when they would be knocking on the door looking for to be fed and protected. My response will be cold, but pragmatic: “We have no extra food. Go away and do not return. Should we see you here again we will consider that you are here to do our family harm and we will respond strongly and immediately.”
It is difficult to reconcile such a pragmatic view with our religious beliefs, but when placed in the context of the survival of our family, children and grandchildren it is easier to accept fully and with confidence.
May 9th, 2011 at 4:16 amPreparedness is just fun! I guess it’s the reward of peace of mind knowing you can better weather that storm when it does come…and it will.
May 9th, 2011 at 5:27 amGreat modernization of a wise old story!
Generations ago, before the just-in-time world of super-markets, our ancestors would never have considered any other option than having stored food and other necessities to carry them through the Winter to the next harvest…and for many, two Winters.
May 9th, 2011 at 7:30 amI find it amusing that the same people who spend hundreds and even thousands of dollars on security systems, insurance and even fire extinguishers, poke fun of we who prepare for other emergency situations. They join triple A, have microchips put in their pets, buy “run-flat” tires, GPS systems and purchase extended warranty contracts on virtually everything they buy, but none have more than a couple of days of food and water, most of it perishable.
May 9th, 2011 at 7:47 amThe ant and grasshopper story is not new , nor is my preparedness , I used to be called a survivalist before that term became politically incorrect . Now I am just as ready as I can afford to be , not as much as I would like to be but much more than most . There is not a better hobby than preparedness because it is the only one likely to save the lives of your loved ones . God blesses us all , but he also helps those who help themselves and others .
May 9th, 2011 at 10:43 amI enjoyed the article about the grasshopper and the ant.
May 9th, 2011 at 8:23 pmIf more folks were like the ants, the United States would be better off. Let us all prepare a little everyday.
I JUST wrote an article using this EXACT metaphor. Kudos for being on the same brain wave.
May 10th, 2011 at 1:52 pmI live in a hurricane prone area and yes we go through preparation information this time ever year. But I’m preparing for something much more disastrous something that will affect the United States on a HOLD! People, please take this serious!!!
May 10th, 2011 at 2:03 pmI agree with Johnatan.
“Preparedness is just fun”
In my everyday life I watch people go about their lives, with no idea about being predpared. I work as a local Police Officer and it always amazes me that during a motor vehicle accident when we have to close a specific road, the residents have NO idea how to get to their house.
In my area we have had what have been called “flood of a hundred years”, its funny that for two years running we have had the same flood issues. They were not HUGE floods but enough to wash out roads to neighborhoods. I speak to people that I know and their plan if a MAJOR event happens is to depend on the Government for help.
I feel bad for these people.
We have time NOW to prepare, even the smallest of effort will pay off in the event of a major event.
Some people just will never understand what being prepared trully means.

May 14th, 2011 at 9:40 pmI would like an honest opinion. We live in AZ. Therefore, we do not have to worry about most of the weather problems other people have had. God bless to them. We do have the extreme heat. Does anyone really think that we will all have in the states, some kind of tragedy? Some sort of dark days to worry about with out food or water readily available at the stores? I realize that it is better to be prepared and hope that nothing major does happen. There are so many scary problems right now with this country. Is anybody really worried about an American meltdown? I hope no one thinks I am crazy for asking, but there seems to be more talk about this than ever. I did not buy into the Y2K scare, but things were not as bad as they are now.
Thank you so much for your help.
