Jobless Claims & Inflation Are Up, The Solution is…

Thursday’s economic news was pretty bleak.  According to a CNBC article the number of Americans claiming new jobless benefits rose last week and consumer prices increased at the fastest pace in four months in July.  Prices are up, jobs are down; not a good combination if you haven’t prepared.

Our country is built upon an idea of government of the people, by the people and for the people.  In the end it’s the people who elect their leaders. Could it be that the poor choices and irresponsible policies of our politicians are simply a reflection of the sad state of mind, of the many who have elected these politicians?

Now don’t get me wrong.  I’m not saying that every American is to blame.  Certainly not those who are preparedness minded.  But if you look at individual homes in America, too many of them resemble the mismanaged financial crisis in our government.  Many are spending more than they bring in.   Many are struggling under a load of debt.  Too many wouldn’t be able to last even three days without the credit card and a trip to the grocery store.  There are some who are in this situation because of no fault of their own, but a large percentage of others have their heads in the clouds and don’t believe they need to change their ways.

These same people are the one’s who point their fingers at Preppers and mock with statements like “You shouldn’t hoard”, or “you are a doomsday-er aren’t you?”

If America is in a financial crisis, the real solution is individual responsibility.  Each person needs to look ahead, and make the necessary preparations for themselves and their families.  When the majority of Americans think this way, they will send the right people into political office and many of the problems we face today will no longer be an issue.

No wonder there is a crisis coming.

Those that did not, (after 120 years of Noah’s warnings) perished.

Exactly. Just like disciplined, respectful children, it has to start at home. We live in a society of “it’s not my responsibility”. People need to wake up and take responsibility for their lives.

The tax rates for derivatives/investment income have been HALVED in the last decade. They are now just about what someone on minimum wage pays after social security, FICA, FUDA and state base income taxes. Why are the richest 1% paying a lower amount? Isn’t all income the same? If you make 1 million working or investing–what’s the difference? I know, those that invested paid taxes on the money already–because they were WORKING already. They got paid because they worked. Plus, if you have stock options you are still working–you just pay 15%.

We RAN a surplus in 2000 and 2001 so we can do it again but everyone needs to pay according to their ability.

Finally, I benefited from the lower tax rates. It saves me $5k a year but i don’t think its right.

The average US family has three to five day’s reserve food. These people buy food every few days. What if many of them decided at once to buy, say, only a month’s worth of food.

The demand for food would increase bu many multiples. The supply system would be overwhelmed and the stores would be empty.

There is essentially no food warehousing going on now, as businesses have learned it is more efficient to use Just-In-Time resupply systems to reduce capital cost of holding inventory. Also the transportation system to these stores, usually a few big supermarkets, is designed to handle the current steady demand. Just so many trucks and so many farms.

What would be the most likely reason people would change their desire for reserves from three days to longer? Fear or inflation as this article asserts or both.

The only way to protect your family is to prepare early for coming shortages. This is not hoarding as there are no shortages now. Except, that I’ve seen a real decline in a availability at long-term food preparation companies like this one.

Actually I think a person working forty hours at minimum wage pays no taxes and may even get money paid to them by other taxpayers as a ‘refund’. But it’s not a refund of anything is it?

Richard, your backwards thinking is destroying this country. It’s liberal socialists like you that kill the American spirit and threaten democracy. Who do you think pays almost all the taxes in this country? Here are some stats:
    Top 0.1% – 22.70%
    Top 1.0% – 23.27%
    Top 5% – 20.70%
    Top 10% – 18.71%
    Top 25% – 15.68%
    Top 50% – 13.65%

    Bottom 50% – 2.59%
Hello? We are in a recession. Now is the time to cut spending and lower the tax burden. Your idea to raise taxes on the rich is so short-sighted. We have seen a drastic decline in the millionaires in this country. Once they are eliminated with your backwards thinking, who do you think will bear a much greater tax burden?
Did you guess you will? Then, after a while the middle class will be taxed into poverty, and viola, you have socialism. You will get what you deserve, the super rich and the poor. Why don’t you go move to Venezuela and hook up with your friend Chavez and see how your theory works in real life.

Let’s get down to brass tax!! A flat tax which EVERYONE pays is the answer to all the squabbling amongst the classes and parties. It is the ONLY true solution to our country’s tax problems. It’s a very simple thing to know how much money there is to spend when, based upon work force and unemployment statistics, the Fed Govt would know almost exactly how much revenue they would have. No more right offs, no more subsidies, EVERYONE pays equally. There is no fairness at all in the fact that 50% of this nation does not pay taxes. There is no fairness at all that the top 2% pay 70% of the taxes in this country but after their right offs, they pay squat. The middle class shoulders the tax burden and this government and unions have done a bang up job of losing middle class jobs for the past 40 years. Rightly so that spending MUST be cut across the board, but a flat tax to shore up Medicare, SS, and generalized govt spending will in fact resolve most of these woes.

The only solution for crisis is individual responsibility to help yourself, your family, and then your neighbors. As the airlines put it: “Put your oxygen mask on first then help those around you”. Are you ready?

I don’t consider preparing for disasters by stocking up on food and supplies as hoarding. It’s no different than purchasing car insurance. Just as I wouldn’t want to drive on the road without it “just in case” I wouldn’t want to go without an emergency plan at home.
Anyone else note that recent government commercials are advertising for preparedness in case of a disaster?
A lot of people need to quit watching “American Idle” and other distractions and learn to become more self sufficient.
Otherwise, when a disaster strikes, they’ll be herded into shelters just like victims of Katrina. That went well for all involved, eh?

If many people buy in much larger than usual quantities and supermarkets restock with only slightly larger than normal quantities then simple math shows that without much burden, everything would soon recover. Even in a panic it returns to normal. The only difference is people are prepared for emergency, whether it be a job loss an unexpected expense or much worse. Thats not hoarding thats wisdom. Threats by governments and individuals are almost always redirected towards a less important and inconsequential distract from the real threats. The only things downplayed are of course certainties. The lack of food if you haven’t prepared could cost you your life inside a month. If you don’t understand that then why have a savings account either.

Of all my friends that I have told about this site and other sites for emergency foods, and told them I stock up, only one has taken my advice. It sure save a lot of gas because I don’t run out of food every couple of days.

government overspending has brought us to where we are today. and governments answere to this problem is more overspending. they are trying to borrow us out of debt. that is like trying to save a drowning man by throwing more water on him. what it can’t tax or borrow, it prints. that is why gold is so high. i see long term storage food as a tangible asset, something to have on hand when a crisis happens. it does not matter which crisis. i also don’t buy the hoarding argument, when a squirrel stores his nuts for winter, is he hoarding? i am simply preparing for the worst while i hope for the best, and i pray that i am not eating this food out of necessity, but because it is no longer needed.

Well said comments from all (except Mr. Smythe). To you, Mr. Smythe, I say: From each according to his ability, to each according to his need (or needs) is a slogan popularised by Karl Marx in his 1875 Critique of the Gotha Program.[1] The phrase summarizes the principles that, in a communist society, every person should contribute to society to the best of his or her ability and consume from society in proportion to his or her needs. In the Marxist view, such an arrangement will be made possible by the abundance of goods and services that a developed communist society will produce; the idea is that there will be enough to satisfy everyone’s needs……so how’s that been working out for the USSR, Cuba, Albania, and the myriad of other former communist regimes??? How’s it been working under Obama, who wants to take us to this “spread the wealth” form of socialism.

I have a few better quotes for you: A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned – this is the sum of good government.

To take from one because it is thought that his own industry and that of his father’s has acquired too much, in order to spare to others, who, or whose fathers, have not exercised equal industry and skill, is to violate arbitrarily the first principle of association—the guarantee to every one of a free exercise of his industry and the fruits acquired by it.

I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.

All of these quotes are from Thomas Jefferson, who basically wrote the Declaration of Independence and was our 3rd President. I suggest that if Mr. Smythe wants the U.S. to be more like Karl Marx ideal, he should look elsewhere to live than try to change the founding principles of this country.

    3. Hoarding — YES, you $%^& right I hoard, if I didn’t I wouldn’t have anything. We are responsible for 10 people.
the follow e-mail is from my daughter yesterday after my wife said, we have NO money and right now I am sitting here eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for my lunch (we have cases and cases of food storage but the clothing swap was this last weekend and we ate fast food a lot) here is the e-mail, “just pay it with your card and ill give you the money for it. I have to have water”. The last sentence, I have to have water. What did I do this weekend but fill ANOTHER 30 2-liter soda bottles w/water and store them. I only hoard for a short time because by then it has depleted from sharing. Try living on your food storage and sharing with 8 people who constantly need help and yes I WILL CONTINUE HOARDING! if only for a short period of time. The thing with me is this—the more I tell other people about food storage and prepardness, the less I may have to share mine with them.
