Can I Use Bleach To Purify My Water?

At The Ready Store, we often get this question. Many believe that household bleach is good for purifying water. Here is the best answer we can provide.

Household bleach is not manufactured with human consumption in mind. The chemicals are much higher than what would be considered safe for human consumption. Having said that, if you don’t have anything else, using bleach may is better than nothing.

The Japan Crisis: What Does It Mean for Me?

On Friday, March 11, 2011 at 02:46:23pm, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck about 80 miles east of Sendai, just off the northeast coast of Japan. This earthquake, which was the largest earthquake in recorded history for Japan, was caused by thrust faulting on or near the subduction zone plate boundary between the Pacific and North America plates. Modeling by the United States Geological Survey indicates that the fault moved 130 ft! This incredible movement triggered a huge tsunami which caused waves as high as 30ft clear across the ocean on the west coast of the United States and utterly devastated coastal towns and villages on Japan’s northeast coast with waves as high as 80ft traveling at 45mph!

Did You have to Take a Number and Get in Line?

A little over a week ago there were literally millions of headlines from across the world that read something like this:

“8.9-magnitude earthquake struck causing a tsunami”

For future reference when you see headlines like this in mainstream media you’ll know that for most people in the area that was affected the time for preparation is in the past. A week later and now all the headlines read something like this:

“Japan’s nuclear crisis has led to empty shelves at shops in Tokyo.”

In the emergency preparedness industry you commonly hear the phrase, better to prepare too early than a second too late.

The unimaginable disaster in Japan and even on a lesser scale, the current economic concerns here in the US are validating just how true this statement really is.

Mountain House and Saratoga Farms

The past few months in our industry have been a little crazy to say the least. The spike in demand has been growing since November and doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon. As a result, there have been some supply chain issues. The biggest issue for the emergency preparedness industry has been the inability of Mountain House to keep up with demand, especially for their entrees. We are one of their few preferred vendors that continue to receive shipments, but the shipments are just not enough. Last week, Mountain House requested all vendors to stop accepting orders for their entrees until they can catch up, which they’re saying is going to be at least 3-4 months.

But here’s the good news…our exclusive Saratoga Farms Country Kitchen entrees are doing a much better job at keeping up with demand, and we are increasing the available selection to give our customers more readily available entree options. Because our customers have been seeing and hearing more about the Saratoga Farms Country Kitchen entrees we’ve been getting a lot of questions about how they compare with other entrees. We’ve created the graphic below and posted it on all relevant product pages on our site to help our customers understand some of the differences and similarities so they can make the best decision for their family. So…. here’s the skinny on these new and exciting Saratoga Farms Country Kitchen entrees:

Supply Chain Strained…

There is no doubt this is the busiest time the emergency preparedness industry has seen in the almost 10 years we have been in business. Just today we called 5 of our top competitors to reconfirm this. Their ship times on freeze-dried orders averaged 4 weeks with a few of them in the 5 to 6 week range,  in stock items were often not shipping for a couple weeks due to the need to get back ordered shipments out the door first.

Update On Shipping Times…

Dear Valued Customers –

We are in the midst of unprecedented demand for emergency supplies and food storage products. As the world continues to become more unpredictable, many people are realizing the importance and necessity of having extra food and emergency supplies stored. Like any other insurance policy, it makes good sense to have it, even though you hope to never have to use it.

We very much appreciate your patience as we are experiencing extremely long ship times. These delays are industry wide and are a result of the fact that demand is far outpacing production capacity. Along with our vendors, we are increasing our output to meet this increase in demand, but even still, there are long wait times to receive your orders.
