Landslide Preparedness

Landslides can occur quickly and often with little notice.  One of the best ways to get ready is to stay informed about any changes in your area. Landslides occur in all U.S. states. They are caused by a variety of factors including fires,  earthquakes,  floods, and storms.  Landslides, also known as mudslides, cause $1-2 billion in damages and more than 25 deaths per year.

Urban developments expanding into hillsides areas have lead to more houses and structures threatened by landslides each year.  In the mid-1970’s the National Landslide Hazards Program or better known has (LHP) has been gathering information and have been publishing reports as well as being one of the top sources for landslide information.

Landslide potential of the conterminous United States: Red areas have very high potential, yellow areas have high potential, and green areas have moderate potential. Landslides can and do occur in the black areas, but the potential is low. Map not to scale. Sources: the National Atlas and the USGS

Effectively preparing for a landslide depends on where you live.  High warning (view image above) areas like steep slopes or along natural erosion valleys are common. It is best that you become familiar with the history of the area that you live in. In order to find out if your area has a history of landslides, you need to contact your local officials.

Your local authorities will have information about the emergency response and evacuation plans for your area.  We recommend that you communicate with your family and friends regarding your emergency plans in case you are affected at home, work, or school. You should always pay attention for changes in the landscape, especially in high warning areas. If you see new cracks in the foundation, side walk, or something simple like water drainage pattern changes it can be a warning that a land slide could occur.

If you are worried that you will be affected by fires, floods, earthquakes, and storms it is best to listen to NOAA Weather Radio, watch the news, or listen to your local radio stations and they should inform you of the warnings in your area. If you want more information regarding your state and information that can always be useful please go to http://www.usgs.gov/state/ and check out your state.

Weekly Winner! Geri Chase!

Congratulations Geri! You have just won our weekly contest!

After battling sick kids all day it was such a nice surprise to open you email to see that I won your weekly giveaway!  Whoo-hoo!!  Thank you so much!  I find the information you put on the blog very useful and informative, food storage and readiness preparation is always on our minds, but we don’t always know the best way to approach it, so I am glad to have The Ready Store as a resource.  The two week supply is greatly needed!

I am a stay at home mom from Surprise, AZ where I live with my husband and two boys, all of whom keep me very busy.  I am also an avid blogger and do some freelance writing to help make ends meet and I am also a director for a non-profit organization that assists our military families.  As someone who struggles with the art of cooking, I have finally decided to make an effort to learn how to use and prepare all kinds of food so that I am comfortable dealing with ingredients of any kind should I find myself in a tough situation.  Learning how to use food storage has been a challenge for someone who can find a way to mess up a box cake mix, but I am making progress!  I look forward to becoming the Martha Stewart of freeze-dried foods one day.  A lofty goal, but hey…someone’s gotta take the title!

We are happy to help Geri and we also would like to thank everyone who decided to enter the contest this week!

The great thing about this weeks contest is that even if you didn’t win, you still can make money if you put our widget on your blog!

Make sure you tune in on Friday for our next contest!

As always make sure you let us know of any ideas you have on how to help your family get ready!

H1N1 Flu Vaccine Shortage

For the last little while we have been assured that there will be enough H1N1 Flu Vaccine for everyone.  However this past week it was announced that there is only 30 million available nationwide.  The Los Angeles Times reported that:

“Officials at the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had expected about 40 million doses of the swine flu vaccine to be distributed by the end of the month, but it looks as though a maximum of 28 million to 30 million doses will actually be shipped, said Dr. Anne Schuchat, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. That’s about 25% fewer than expected.

“Vaccine production is pretty complex, and it is taking a bit longer than we would hope,” she said at a news conference Friday.
In particular, growing the virus in eggs has not yielded as much antigen — the crucial component of the vaccine — as is normally obtained with the seasonal flu.

Despite the current low production, however, there are no plans to use adjuvants — chemicals added to increase the immune response to the antigen — to extend the supply of the pandemic H1N1 vaccine, said Dr. Jesse Goodman of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.”

Weather you believe in taking the vaccine or not, I would like to use this to illustrate the importance of not relying on the government or anyone else for that matter to secure the health and safety of your family.  There are things you can do to greatly reduce your risk of contracting this or any other kind of flu.  It just takes a little preparedness.

If you have been waiting around for the government or others to make sure you will be safe in this or any other disaster you will most likely be disappointed just like the example above.  Please make sure that you take a long hard look at your situation.  Make sure you have a solid food storage, water, and emergency supply plan in place for your family.  You can get what you need right here at TheReadyStore.com.

As for the H1N1 Flu, you can get reserpator masks, quarenteen kits, and other supplies that will both help keep you from getting sick and help you if you do get sick.

This last week my nephew just contracted the H1N1 virus.  They were unable to get the vaccine because of the shortage mentioned above.  Do you really think that it’s a good idea to rely on anyone but yourself to get ready?  I don’t.  You don’t have to live in fear.  You don’t have to worry another minute about your families safety.  All you need to do is take action right now and get your family prepared.

Power Outage Priorities & Tips

Power outages can happen at any time to anyone in any place. Extended power outages can be scary and dangerous if you are not prepared, especially in times of extreme cold or heat, but if you are prepared before hand and know what your priorities are, the danger can be eliminated and the time even enjoyed. After all if the power is out, you can stay home with your family and spend some quality time together. Below are the top three priorities and some tips to help you and your family be safe, secure, and comfortable when the power goes out.

#1: Protect Your Self & Family

The first thing you need to worry about in a power outage is the safety and health of yourself, your family, and any other individuals in your home or neighborhood. Here are some tips for keeping you and your family safe:

  • If there are damaged power lines in your vicinity, DO NOT go near them, call your utility company or 9-1-1 immediately.
  • Check on any friends or neighbors that may require electrically powered medical devices and make sure they are OK.
  • If you have to drive somewhere, be careful. Remember that traffic lights could be inoperable and cause accidents or delays.
  • Minimize movement in the dark. If it is dark, be careful. Most injuries during power outagesoccur when people are rummaging around in the dark for something. Hold still and wait for your eyes to adjust, and then get what you need. Keep a dynamo flashlight in a easy to access place, so you don’t have to search around for flashlights and batteries.
  • Warmth & shelter is your number one priority in any emergency. If it is cold outside, put some warm clothes on. Close all doors and windows to maintain a safe temperature inside. Take a hot shower to increase your body temperature if you get too cold, but use hot water sparingly. Most water heaters are insulate and can keep water warm up to three days. If it is hot outside, keep your windows and doors closed until it gets hotter inside than it is outside, then open the windows to increase air circulation.
  • Generate your own power. Gasoline, solar, or wind generators can be extremely useful during power outages. These devices can be used to power safe electrical heaters or coolers, used to power your refrigerator or freezer, and even for communication devices. There are many options that don’t require a significant investment. Renewable energy sources such as wind and solar are especially useful
because fuel supply for gasoline generators can be scarce in times of
emergency and it is not feasible or sometimes not even legal to store
large amounts of fuel to run generators for extended periods of time.
  • Don’t poison yourself with carbon monoxide. Don’t use combustion fume producing devices inside your home without proper ventilation. Things like small gasoline engines, generators, lanterns, gas ranges or ovens, burning charcoal and wood, charcoal grills, hibachis, lanterns, or portable camping stoves can produce potentially deadly carbon monoxide gases. Prepare yourself before hand with carbon monoxide detectors in your home and a safe way to heat or cool your home in the event of a power outage.
  • Make sure your water is safe. Power outage can also disable local water treatment and could cause your drinking water to be unsafe. Prepare yourself before hand with bottled water, a water filtered or purifier, or a way to chemically treat your own water. Our MIOX water purifier makes the same technology many municipal water treatment centers use available to you and your family in cases of emergency.
  • Make a plan to communicate with or locate your family members that might not be home. Have a standard corded phone available to use. Cordless phones will not work without electricity. Cell phones will usually work, but local towers may be without power or necessary communication lines may have been damaged as well. Your cell phone battery might be dead or low, so prepare yourself with a dynamo cell phone charger.
  • If the power outage was caused by an electrical storm, don’t
use corded phones unless you absolutely need to. Lightning has been
known to strike and travel along phone lines injuring persons using
    corded phones.
  • Know where your switch box, fuse box, or breaker box is located. Know how to reset the circuit breaker or safely
change a fuse, and keep proper spares on hand.

#2: Protect Your Food Supply

After you and your loved ones are safe, the next thing you need to worry about is your food. If the power outage lasts for an extended period of time, you will need to keep any perishable food from going bad, and know when food is not safe to eat. Here are some tips to keep your food edible and know when not to eat it:

  • Prepare yourself with an emergency stove to heat water and cook your food without electricity.
  • Keep a supply of shelf-stable food such as freeze-dried food or
dehydrated food to use if your perishable food runs out before the
power returns. These foods, especially freeze-dried food, will require little or no preparation or cooking to eat and will stay safe without refridgeration.
  • Keep your refrigerator and freezer doors closed. If the power is out for 2 hours or less, the food in your refrigerator is fine. If it is out for more than two hours, then remember that food in a half-full freezer will be safe for 24 hours, and food in a full freezer will be safe for 48 hours. Use a food thermometer to check the temperature of food before you eat or cook it. If it is more than 40 degrees, then it is possibly not safe to eat.
  • Use the ice from your freezer and a cooler or thermos to pack any milk, dairy products, meat, fish, eggs, gravy, and spoilable food. This will keep it safe longer than in your refrigerator. If you don’t have enough space in your freezer or ice-packed thermos, eat the food that will spoil first.

#3: Protect Your Belongings

Power outages are most often caused by electrical storms or other storms causing damage to the power transmission lines. Continuing electrical storm activity or surges in the grid when power is restored can cause damage to electrical devices. Here are some tips to prevent damage and the need for costly repairs.

  • Make sure all of your electrical devices including kitchen appliances, computers, stereos, clocks, televisions and dvd players, modems, wireless routers, and phones are plugged into a surge protector before a power outage occurs. This includes communication lines such as phone lines and internet cables as well. Power surges can travel through these lines and irreparably damage devices. Power surges will most likely occur when the power goes out, so these surge protectors should protect you from damage.
  • Power surges can occur when the power comes back on as well, so it is wise to unplug all electrical and communication cables from devices until the power comes back on, especially those not connected to a surge protector.

Top 5 Reasons to have a Hand-Powered Grain Mill

Some of you might wonder ‘why in the world would I want a Grain Mill?’ When living in a world where you can just drive around the corner and pick up your groceries and not think about the process it took to make your whole grain breads, cereals, and other bakery goods. That’s why I am happy to tell you the top 5 reasons why you should have our Hand-Powered Grain Mill, I hope that you will take into consideration the importance of having one.

#5 Size Matters

With our Hand-Powered Grain Mill you will notice that with the design it is very thin and sleek, when attaching it to your drawer, table, or cupboard you don’t want to be stuck juggling a heavy or bulky grain mill. The Hand-Powered Grain Mill is very easy to operate & the instructions are not in another language that is hard to understand. When you have to store your Hand-Powered Grain Mill you will not have to worry about the storage space, with it only being 12″ (L) x 4″ (W) x 2″ (H) it will not take up a large amount of space.

#4 Durability

When living in a world where 90% of all goods are made out of plastic or imported from over seas, you always want a product that will not break the first time you operate it. The Hand-Powered Grain Mill is made out of a cast stainless-steel stand, so if you drop or bump into it you don’t have to worry if it is broken. Now you might be wondering how strong is the mill blade? The mill is a cast stainless-steel cone-shaped grinding burrs for long life and smooth, even milling every time.

#3 Self Sufficient

When never knowing when the next emergency will strike, it’s always good to know that you have the products that will help you be self-sufficient. When in need of basic supplies in an emergency, having to run to the store to buy those supplies will be crazy, dealing with everyone else and having one thing on your mind and that is finding what you need and if its even there. When any storm or emergency strikes you will have anywhere from 1-2 hours tops to buy food and water supplies from your grocery store. With having your own grain mill there is nothing holding you back from making amazing variety of new textures and flavors in home baked breads, cereals, snacks and my favorite, desserts.

#2 Green Energy

When planning for an emergency you never know if you will or will not have power available. Other brands of grain mills require that you have electricity to use the mill. With your Hand-Powered Grain Mill you don’t have to worry about if you will have power, and all you need to do is just grab onto the handle that is attached to the grain mill & start turning. You might wonder since its hand powered it would not put out a large amount of grain. *Buzz!* Wrong! The Hand-Powered Grain Mill will make around 1/2 cup of fine flour per minute and more than twice that quantity on coarse settings.

#1 Nutrition

With having freshly ground wheat flour that is high in protein, fiber, and iron content; as well as vitamins that degrade all too quickly when exposed to the air. The whole grain flour that we buy from stores is often quite stale and may have significantly reduced vitamin content when compared to freshly ground flour. We all know that in order to be healthy you must have a stable diet of grains, fruits, and vegetables. You must keep nutrition on the top of your priority in an emergency and with your Hand-Powered Grain Mill you will have that needed nutrition available.

Ideas to Improve Emergency Prep and Engagement

SUPPORT & REPORT ON STATE/LOCAL PREPAREDNESS EFFORTS — We should provide money for state and local government to assist civilian preparedness programs. Encourage authorities to report on their level of citizen preparedness and create ways for better measuring civilian readiness.  Expand support of disaster volunteer opportunities including Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) and other community programs. Combining state, local and community leadership and citizen involvement with federal commitment and focus. Ensure that government authorities can competently and quickly respond to disasters, but more strongly emphasize the need for the public and local communities to be prepared and self-reliant, most importantly in the first 72 hours after a disaster.

BRING IN MORE BUSINESSES TO HELP MARKET PREPAREDNESS Design and roll out a full service preparedness marketing campaign with help from the private sector. Galvanize business to take on disaster preparedness the same way they have with disaster response.  (ie. big box stores, packaged goods manufacturers, bottled water companies, wireless industry). In addition, work with private sector to alleviate existing obstacles to personal preparedness (ie. work with health care industry to allow for extra prescription medicine in advance of a disaster.)

GET THE CHILDREN INVOLVED — Put more emphasis on educating young people on preparedness by adding them to other related school-based education efforts. (like fire safety, for example). The challenge is both the nation’s leniency on the education system and the already high demands on teachers. However, an effective fire education program was implemented in the schools in the 1970’s, and there seems to be a perfect fit to integrate a preparedness module into that existing program. The federal government should work with state and local officials as well as fire and education officials to determine how best to accomplish this objective

AN OFFICIAL PREPAREDNESS DAY Create a National Preparedness Day to focus the public’s attention before disasters.  This should include briefing citizens, conducting drills, and filling emergency kits. A helpful model is Japan’s Disaster Prevention Day held on the anniversary of the catastrophic 1923 Tokyo earthquake.<

BUNDLE CITIZEN PREPAREDNESS PROPOSALS TOGETHER INTO “CITIZEN PREPAREDNESS INITIATIVE”– For too long, well meaning public preparedness efforts have been ignored or lost by the public. They have not been packaged and presented as being specifically directed to citizens, but if the government would assemble these small disparate proposals listed above into an overall citizen-preparedness package it would have a better chance of getting attention and gaining some traction. Basically, making things work with citizen preparedness is less of a matter of money than it is of focus and attention.

The Ultimate Currency

There has been a lot in the news these days about the decline of the U.S. Dollar.  Countries such as Russia and China have been pushing for a new world currency or a basket of currencies to replace the dollar as the worlds reserve currency.

Just this morning Brendan Murray of Bloomberg posted an article about this very problem.  I’ll quote a little from that article:

“President Barack Obama’s effort to lead the world economic recovery by spending the U.S. out of its recession is undermining the dollar, triggering record commodities rallies as investors scour the globe for hard assets.

As threats of a financial meltdown fade, the currency is falling victim to an unprecedented budget deficit, near-zero interest rates and slow growth.

The dollar is down 10 percent against six trading partners’ legal tender in Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner’s first eight-and-a-half months, the sharpest drop for a new occupant of that office since the Reagan administration’s James Baker persuaded world leaders to boost the deutsche mark and yen by debasing the dollar in 1985.”

You can read the whole article here if you would like.  So what does this mean to you?  Simply put, your money isn’t worth as much as it used to be.

It can be so frustrating to know that you can work very hard, save up some money, then wake up the next morning and find out you can’t buy that much with it.  In short, you are being robbed.

Many people are hedging the risk of inflation by buying gold,  and that may be a good decision.  But in the end, even gold requires that you exchange it for the things you really need, and you can’t eat it.

Yes my friends the ultimate way to protect your family against economic turmoil is with Food Storage.  If you store food and water you are storing security for your family.

Freeze Dried Food can store for longer than 30 years.  So when you are making your plans for financial security, please remember that Food Storage is the ultimate currency.
