Start A ReadyGarden!

In a world where the cost of oil is always on your mind & the cost of food is growing as well as having fresh produce, many people are returning to the old ways and growing there own vegetables. A Brigham Young University study showed that for an average garden you would spend about $30 for seeds but harvest vegetables that would be worth more than $600 per year!

Some of you might be intimidated with the fact that you don’t have enough free time in your day to take care of a garden or that you don’t know enough about gardening that you would be overwhelmed.

I’m not asking you to plant a full or half acre of vegetables; you only need to plant just a few plants to understand the simple process of gardening and the best part about it is that you will save money on your grocery bill.  I hope this information will help you with starting your vegetable garden, and the key things you want to take into consideration is the space & the time it takes you to maintain your garden.

Unfortunately, even in a basic garden you will occasionally need to pull weeds, and when you reach for your Ultimate ReadyGarden™ ½ Acre Premium Garden Seeds – #10 Can, inside you will have 8 pages instructions on how to plant your vegetable garden. Topics such as Soil Modifications, Soil Moisture & Planting, Fertilizer, Using Space Wisely and in each plant group it will give you a general time line that you should plant the listed items.

So if you all ready have seeds & you want to start to plant your garden you should create a garden plan. Draw out a simple draft on how you would like your plants set up and document which plants will grow best where. You can always go to your local garden supply store with any questions regarding sunlight, soil drainage and keep a little note book with your results so you will help you plant your garden next season.

Prepare the soil- One thing I always remember is my father would rent a tiller & would turn the soil before planting his garden. If you are going to deal with a small garden plot you can turn the soil with a shovel, and remember to remove old roots and rocks when you turn the soil. Try not to worry about the soil too much, by rotating it circulates the nutrients well, and you can always check the pH level in your soil to chose what vegetables would be suitable for your soil.

Use a good organic fertilizer to add nutrients to soil, help with soil texture, and add organic matter.  You can also help your soil by having a compost pile; Its great for the soils health. Vegetable gardens love compost! If you haven’t gotten a compost pile going yet, buy a soil amendment to mix in the garden bed. If concerned that you don’t have good soil, a raised bed or container gardening would be a great way to start growing vegetables.

If you have children & you want them to stay away from picking all your green tomatoes then what I highly recommend is have a garden area for your child. Chose plants that are fun and easy to grow (cherry tomatoes, herbs, lambs ear, sunflowers, and edible plants), also a great idea to add plants that include various textures, tastes , and smells (like Mint).

I remember having a container garden of my own growing up with simple vegetables (tomatoes, peas, corn, carrots, and lettuce) and its great to get your kids excited when you show them the progress of the plant growing or when you use their vegetables or herbs for dinner.

Preserving the harvest is worth a mention. If you are not succession planting (spacing plantings by a week or two to lengthen harvest time), garden harvests can be overwhelming if there is a lot of produce to eat. Wasting food is not an option.

So, you can freeze, can, dry or pickle the fruits, vegetables, and herbs. See National Center for Home Food Preservation for tons of information on how to preserve the harvest. But freezing vegetables is usually the fastest, easiest way to save them for later.  Even some cookbooks have detailed instructions on freezing or canning fruits and vegetables.

The History of MREs, or Meals, Ready-to-Eat

The Meal, Ready-to-Eat — commonly known as the MRE — is an individual field ration that is in lightweight, self contained packaging. The United States military buys MREs for its service members to use in combat or other field conditions where organized food facilities are not available. The MRE replaced the  Meal, Combat, Individual rations (called MCI’s) in 1981 and is has also replaced the LRP ration developed by the U.S. Army for Special Forces and U.S. Army Ranger patrol units in Vietnam.

History

The first soldier ration consisted mostly of beef, peas, and rice. It was intended to be enough food for a soldier for one day. The military used canned goods during the Civil War. Later, they issued kits that contained whole rations, and contained canned meat, salt pork, bread, coffee, sugar and salt. During the First World War, canned meats were replaced with lightweight preserved meats (salted or dried), in order to save weight and allow more rations to be carried by soldiers carrying their supplies on foot.

At the beginning of World War II,  quite a few new field rations were introduced, including the Mountain ration and the Jungle ration. However, cost-cutting measures by Quartermaster Command officials during the latter part of World War II and the Korean War made it necessary to come up with a specific ration that could be used regardless of the environment. The use of canned wet rations continued through the Vietnam War, with the improved MCI field ration.

After repeated experiences dating from before World War II, Pentagon officials ultimately realized that simply providing a nutritionally balanced meal in the field was not adequate. Service members in various geographic regions and combat situations often required different sub-sets of ingredients for food to be considered palatable over long periods.

Moreover, catering to individual tastes and preferences would encourage service-members to actually consume the whole ration and its nutrition. Most importantly, the use of specialized forces in extreme environments and the necessity of carrying increasingly heavy field loads while on foot during extended missions required significantly lighter alternatives to standard canned wet rations.

In 1963, the Department of Defense began developing the “Meal, Ready to Eat”, a ration that would rely on modern food preparation and packaging technology to create a lighter replacement for the canned Meal, Combat, Individual ration. This led in 1966 to the Long Range Patrol or LRP ration, a dehydrated meal stored in a waterproof canvas pouch. However, just as with the jungle ration, its expense compared to canned wet rations as well as the costs of stocking and storage a specialized field ration led to its limited usage and repeated attempts at discontinuance by Quartermaster Command officials.

In 1975, work began on a dehydrated meal stored in a plastic retort pouch. It went into special issue starting in 1981 and standard issue in 1986, using a limited menu of 12 entrees.

The MRE has been in continual development since 1993. In an array of field tests and surveys, service members requested more entree options and larger serving sizes. By 1994, commercial-like graphics were added to make the packets more user-friendly, while biodegradable materials
were introduced for non-edible components such as spoons and napkins.

Some of the early MRE main courses were not very palatable, earning them the nicknames “Mr. E” (mystery), “Meals Rejected by Everyone”, “Meals, Rarely Edible”, “Meals Rejected by the Enemy”, “Morsels, Regurgitated, Eviscerated”, “Meal, Ready to Excrete”, “Materials Resembling Edibles”, and even “Meals Rejected by Ethiopians“. Some meals got their own nicknames. For example, the frankfurters, which came sealed in pouches of four, were referred to as “the four fingers of death”. Although quality has improved over the years, many of the nicknames have stuck. MREs were often called “Three Lies for the Price of One”: it’s not a Meal, it’s not Ready, and you can’t Eat it.

Their low dietary fiber content could cause constipation in some so they were also known as “Meals Refusing to Exit”,  “Meals Refusing to Excrete”,or “Massive Rectal Expulsions”. While the myth that the gum found in MREs contains a laxative is false, the crackers in the ration pack do contain a higher than normal vegetable content to facilitate egestion. In December 2006 comedian Al Franken (on his 8th USO tour at the time) joked to troops in Iraq that he’d had his fifth MRE so far and “none of them had an exit strategy”.

My how far we’ve come!  The MRE’s of today are some of the most tasty and nutritionally balanced meals you can eat.  The number of entrées expanded to 16 by 1996 (including vegetarian options), 20 entrées by 1997 and 24 entrées by 1998. Today, service members can choose from up to 24 entrées, and more than 150 additional items.

When the free market got involved with MRE’s the quality and taste really jumped up to par.  The MRE’s we sell at TheReadyStore.com are not only healthy, lightweight, and nutrional, but they also taste great! They make your body feel great too!

Dynamo Flashlights, Why are they so important.

You’re sitting around enjoying your favorite TV program or watching your favorite online videos and suddenly your power goes out. You guide your self around your house to find the location where you have your flashlight stored.

You grab hold of the flashlight and try to turn it on and the batteries are dead.  You never want to deal with being stuck with a situation where you have no batteries and no light. That’s when you reach into your 72 hour kit for your Dynamo Flash Light.  If it does not have a charge in it you just grab the handle then rotate it around and in one to two minutes of charging the flashlight you will have hours of bright light. Now you might ask, “How does it work?” and my reply for you is simple, a dynamo has coils of wire rotating inside a magnetic field. The varying magnetic flux causes electrons to move in the coils, thus creating electrical current.
(See Image on Bottom Page)

We at The Ready Store have many different options of Dynamo flashlights with LED bulbs as the light source.  These do not require much electricity in order to put out a bright of light.  The Compact LED Shake ReadyLIGHT is a simple way of having light.  No winding needed; just shake the flashlight and you will generate electricity. Our Ultra-Bright 3-LED Dynamo Flashlight will live up to its name.  The 3-LED lights can put out an ultra-bright light, but when you want to talk about our brightest flash light, look no further. The Compact Dynamo Radio 5-LED Flashlight , Siren – AM/FM one of the brightest & best Dynamo Flashlight/Radio products we have. Now you might wonder what would be an ideal place for your Dynamo Flashlight?

Its also a great idea to give to your children so they have it next to their bed in case they get scared at night and need a flash light.  Or when they are going trick-or-treat they can have a great light source that does not take up any costly batteries. I know form personal experience that they will also enjoy the action of winding of the dynamo flashlight. So next time your power goes out or if you just need to look in a dark place reach for your Dynamo Flashlight & enjoy having a great light source to light your way.

WEEKLY WINNER: Noel Napolitan

Congratulations Noel!  You have just won our weekly contest!  You have won a case of great tasting MRE’s!

You should see the smile on my face. I don’t win things very often and this is the most useful thing, by far, that I’ve ever won!
I’m in my early 40s with a family of 4 and I’ve been interested in preparedness and, really, the whole preparedness industry for quite some time. Until Katrina, I never realized how many people are just not prepared, from a spare P-38 to even knowing where the flashlight is. I am doing my part, as best as I can, to change that. I don’t like seeing people suffer for a lack of a small amount of knowledge.

We are happy to help Noel and we also would like to thank everyone who decided to enter the contest this week!  Make sure you tune in on Friday for our next contest!

As always make sure you let us know of any ideas you have on how to help your family get ready!

I love Fall…

Can you feel it?  The air is getting a little crisper, the leaves are changing color, the kids are back in school, and football is here! In addition to that, with the Summer over, we have the chance to re-focus our efforts for self improvement.   In the old times this was the best time of year because of the recent harvest.

Speaking of Harvest, it’s time to take a look at your food stores and make sure they are up-to-date and rotated.  If you store freeze-dried-food, this isn’t a concern.  But if you have a lot of traditional food storage it’s important to check the expiration dates and make sure you don’t use up precious space storing food that you could never eat.

Maybe now is the time to start replacing your old-outdated food storage with Freeze-Dried-Food.  Imagine this time next year when you won’t have to worry about rotating or updating your food storageFreeze-Dried-Food can last up to 30 years!  All you have to do is add water and eat it.

No need for rotation, and no need for wheat grinders.

True freeze-dried-food will cost you more money upfront, but over time an ultimate year supply of freeze-dried-food will end up costing you $100 per year!

And what is even better is that once you have your food in place, you can spend this time of the year watching more Football! Food Storage can be made easy.  Imagine when you actually use your food storage how nice it will be to just open up the can, add some water, and have a fully-ready made meal that you can eat.  Just imagine how great it will be to know that you will have all the nutritional value you are looking for to keep your family healthy.  Because food storage is not just about staying alive, it’s about thriving during difficult times.

No need to eat foods that your body is not used to.  Instead why not eat delicious Chicken Terriaki! I promise you will be so happy you chose to go the freeze-dried-food route.

Make sure you take this into consideration.  And enjoy your beautiful Fall!

How to Compare Products

Flipping back and forth between pages when trying to compare products can result in a real head ache and leave you more confused than when you started comparing.  I often find myself flipping back and forth to find the best prices, quality or features in closely related items, but after getting lost,  mixing up my information, or finding other items that guide me away from my task I end up giving my search up altogether.  In an instance like this you might come across the ULTIMATE Dynamo Solar Powered Survival Radio and the DELUXE Dynamo Solar Powered Multiband Radio and wonder what the difference in the features are.  We’ve created an easier way to compare these items.

With the simple click of a button you can add these, or any other items, to your compare products list.  Doing this will show you these items at the same time with the relevant information located side-by-side, and here’s how to do it:

Step 1-  Locate the products that you want to compare.  In this example we’ll be comparing the  the ULTIMATE Dynamo Solar Powered Survival Radio and the DELUXE Dynamo Solar Powered Multiband Radio. If you find it listed with other items, (shown in the example on the left, below), the “add to compare” link is located directly below where the price is displayed.  Click on this link.

If you click on that product and it is displayed by itself, (shown in the example on the right, below), the “add to compare” link is located furthest to the right under the “add to cart” button.  (It’s located directly under the “share” link.)

Step 2-  Once you’ve added all the items you want to compare to your list, look to the right of your screen under the ‘Related Products” and “My Cart” categories, and you will see the “Compare Products” category.  (Shown in the example on the right, below)  In that box you then have the options to delete any products you no longer want to compare by clicking the ‘X’ by the product name, or you can clear the entire group but clicking “clear all”, or there’s a big green button that says “Compare Items”.  Click that button.

After clicking the “Compare Items” button, the items you had on the list will then be displayed in a new window.  (Show on the right, below.)

Step 3-Refer to the new window to find the items you’re comparing side by side.  There you will find the many different groups of information next to each other and grouped according to relevancy. This information differs according to the product you are comparing.  A year supply of freeze-dried food wouldn’t need to compare battery life to a six-month supply of freeze-dried food.

I hope this little demonstration makes comparing products easier for you and saves you a head ache in the future!
